When I started this blog I promised myself that I wouldn’t use it as an excuse to buy more books. I’d focus on what I already had on my shelves and read those first. That…hasn’t really happened. Whenever I go home to visit friends and family, I stop by this wonderful used book store and go a little crazy. Seriously, it’s like I walk in, see all the books, and then I black out. Three hours later I need to buy another backpack to carry all the stuff I just bought. Apparently I just can’t help myself.

Second Haul 1

The Bone Season by Samantha Shannon

There’s a book sale that operates out of the library where I work; all of the proceeds go towards library programming, AND the books are dirt cheap. I couldn’t say no to a pristine copy of The Bone Season for $3.  I’ve not read this one – have any of you?

Vicious by V.E. Schwab

So many people rave about this book! I was browsing Bookoutlet and this sucker is the one that started it all. If you’ve never ordered from them, I highly recommend it. Insane deals and decent shipping time (although it’s the shipping costs that’ll get ya).

A Breath of Frost by Alyxandra Harvey

Alyxandra Harvey is a Canadian author, and if there’s one thing I can’t resist, it’s a Canadian SFF book. I’ve actually already read this one – and I thought it was really good! Everyone has their favourite supes, and one of mine happens to be witches. Through in a Regency era setting, a boarding school, and romance? The perfect easy read.

Written in Red by Anne Bishop

I’ve had some unpleasant experiences with Anne Bishop’s books in the past but I’m ready to give her another shot. This series is one that all my favourite bloggers seem to adore, so of course I need to know what the fuss is about. Apparently the protagonist needs to cut herself to have visions? I’m equal parts intrigued and disturbed by that idea.

Second Haul 2

Goliath by Scott Westerfeld

Scott Westerfeld is my favourite YA author, and this is my favourite YA SFF series. Goliath is the final book in the trilogy and I’m sure it’ll be everything I want it to be. Westerfeld never disappoints. If you’ve not read this one, consider this: a young prince pretending to be a pauper meets a young girl pretending to be a male soldier during alternate steampunk WWI. You’re welcome.

Kinslayer by Jay Kristoff

I won’t lie to you, it may have been a mistake to buy this one. I’m “reading” Stormdancer right now and it’s a bit of a tough slog. The first 100 pages were so info dump-y I just couldn’t make myself go on. Only my love for Buruu has convinced me to continue. Please say it gets better! I want to like this one SO BADLY!

The Scroll of Years by Chris Willrich

Another blogosphere favourite! I really like the look of this one, particularly the Asian-influenced setting. Plus, how cool is it that the protagonists are already married? I don’t know that I’ve ever read a book where the romantic leads were already married.

The Warlord of the Air by Michael Moorcock

This was a complete impulse buy…because as I’ve said, I just can’t help myself. I’ve never read a book by Michael Moorcock but I’ve heard he’s brilliant, so I’m quite excited to start this one! Apparently it’s a classic steampunk novel and the first in a series. Plus it’s minuscule, less than 300 pages! The concept of a super short SFF book is pretty exciting to me.

Second Haul 3

A Turn of Light by Julie E. Czerneda

Another Canadian author, whoop whoop! I was shelf-grazing in the book department at Value Village, a second hand store, when I saw this one. The cover art called to me immediately and the premise was more than enough to intrigue. Someone in my town obviously reads a ton of SFF and takes really good care of their books, because I always find the best ones there. The spine looks like it’s never been cracked!

Gameboard of the Gods by Richelle Mead

I was waiting for this to come out in paperpack before getting a copy…because of the cover art change. I want all the books to match, okay?! Sue me. This one sounds incredible, and it’s been ages since I read a Richelle Mead book. Love her writing, and the characters she creates are epic. I loved Vampire Academy and I’m not ashamed. Hopefully Mae will be a badder version of Rose.

Discount Armageddon by Seanan McGuire

Okay, this one’s a bit of a long story. You may not know this, but I’m a pretty big fan of Kelley Armstrong, the Canadian UF/PNR author. I’ve been to like 5 of her signings all across Ontario and I pretty much think she can do no wrong. Then I was reading a recent-ish interview with her where she said that Seanan McGuire was one of her influences and I went out and bought this immediately. I will also be reading the October Daye series, because Kelley told me to (she was obv. speaking directly to me through that interview).

Fated by Benedict Jacka

Completely random impulse buy. Saw it, read the back, bought it. On further inspection there seem to be a few too many similarities to the Dresden Files for comfort, but the only way to know is to read it for sure. UF Male wizard protagonist who’s an old-school loner doesn’t mean it’s a rip-off, right? Right…?

So that’s what I’ve picked up since my last haul. My apologies for the atrocious photography. All of these were snapped with my new phone, which I have yet to master. Which of these books have you read? What did you think of them? And most importantly, which one do I read first?!
