Monthly Recap: June 2018

Welcome to another monthly recap post! Iโ€™ve decided to revive these because I think they’re fun. June was an action-packed month, with tons of reading, work updates, and most importantly, the arrival of our PUPPY! ๐Ÿ˜

The insanity of my June schedule really did a number on my reading and reviewing, and I only read 9 books throughout the entire month. 4 of those books were ARCs, 4 were from the library, and 1 was an audiobook from my Audible library. My favourite reads wereย Trail of Lightning, The Kiss Quotient, A Perilous Undertaking,ย andย Barbed Wire Heartย (review to come).

For those of you who didn’t see me chatting about it on twitter, I’ve recently started a new job! For the past six months, I’ve been the Data and Outreach Librarian for Olivetti Group, a materials science lab at MIT. My duties are varied but most of my work involves creating STEM instructional content for high schoolers based on the lab’s research. It’s quite a departure from the previous jobs I’ve held, but I’m loving the challenge. The best thing about the work I’m doing is being able to bring cutting-edge scientific research to underprivileged students, which makes me feel like all the hard work is 100% worth it.

And last but certainly not least, my guy and I brought our puppy home on June 3rd! Her name is Freya, and she’s a soft-coated wheaten terrier. She’s 12 weeks old and the light of my life. Freya is also a little demon, but that’s puppies for you. Having her at home has completely changed our routine and schedule, like getting up around 5:00 every morning. But the sacrifices are worth it for this face!

She owns me.

My major plans for July include tackling a new project at work on manufacturing scalability, reading more, and taking Freya to her first puppy class! That baby bear needs to socialize with other pups so she can make some buds — and so we can get a bit of a break.

How was your June? Do you have any exciting things planned for July? Let me know in the comments!

  1. I hear you on puppy distractions – I’ve made barely any progress on The Poppy War, even though it’s amaaaaazing. But it’s still worth it for all the puppy time! ๐Ÿ˜€

  2. Your puppy is adorable. What fun! I used to teach chem/physics, so I am so in awe of your job. That’s awesome! I always want more people to science. TKQ was one of my favorites this month too, and will probably rank really high for my year (maybe).

    1. Thanks so much, Sam! She’s the centre of my world now, haha. I love my job so much, which is pretty surprising because when I was a high schooler myself I…did not want to science, to say the least. LOL. TKQ is fantastic! Sign me up for anything and everything that Helen Hoang writes!

  3. Freya is such a cutie, yay for expanding families! Also, congrats on the new job! I’m sure the challenges will be overwhelming initially, but you’ll kick ass!

The Murders of Molly Southbourne caught my attention almost immediately.

    1. SHE’S SO CUTE AND SMOL. Thank you Amber, I’m loving it so far! Career changes/shifts can be a bit crazy (which you know all about!) but this one’s working out beautifully so far.

OMG I really liked it but also found it very disturbing. Like…very disturbing. Review coming on that one soon!

  4. Ooh trail of Lightning- -glad that was good! And The Murders of Molly Southbourne looks interesting too! Like that cover. ๐Ÿ™‚

Aww cute pic! Love the name Freya! And congrats on the new job- awesome!!

    1. Trail of Lightning is amaaaazing. I also really like The Murders of Molly Southbourne, but it freaked me out too. Review coming soon, so keep an eye out.

Thank you, Greg! You’d be surprised how many people don’t “get” the name Freya and think it’s weird. Whatever, it’s their loss! ๐Ÿ˜‚

    1. ME TOO, I love TKQ so much! Helen Hoang is a new favourite for sure. I’m sad to say that I didn’t care for The Unbinding of Mary Reade. Love the concept (queer lady pirates!), but the writing just wasn’t there in my opinion. ๐Ÿ˜ž

  5. OMG – a new job and a puppy. Your job sounds amazing, congratulations. And your cute dog – I have a lakeland terrier, very similar to yours, cute, cuddly, a total nightmare (kidding – or am I??) I would never be without my little Dude – he’s adorable and I hope your Freya is equally stubborn, mischievous and loveable. They’re just amazing little companions.

  6. So glad to read updates form you Danya. I LOVE that puppy! Freya is ADORABLE. Totally worth it, aren’t they? I’m glad you’re enjoying the work and have also managed to read 9 books in such a busy month! 9 is like, waaaay more than I usually read so you’re doing Okay still! ๐Ÿ˜€

July is ARC month for me at the moment. Trying to hit a few of them off my list because I’m not behind exactly, but pretty tightly scheduled so I’d just like to get on top of things.

Hope you have an amazing July!

  7. Freya is ADORABLE!!!!!
And it’s not surprising that she makes you accept such sacrifices with a light heart: I can’t keep a pet, but thanks to a friend’s dogs I have been able to understand how much these furred companions can enrich one’s life with their unabashed love…

  8. I’m still insanely excited you got a puppy and it’s not even mine. She is the cutest thing! They’re hard work but she is going to be totally worth it, I can tell. As for the new job, it does sound very cool and totally different to what you were doing but rewarding all the same. I admit, it sounds like a job which would totally make my brain hurt, but I think it sounds like the hardwork is worth it.

  9. Aww PUPPY! So cute! And your job sounds really interesting! Although I must admit, I have no idea what your previous jobs were lol.

Nine books is great! And I’m definitely interested in Trail of Lightning now because of you ๐Ÿ™‚ Will have to see if my library gets it!

  10. Yay for bringing back the monthly recap! Another way to be nosy about your life! ๐Ÿ˜‰
I’m thrilled to hear the new job is going well and honestly, it sounds SO COOL. I think jobs need to be challenging to keep you on your toes and yours sounds perfect.

And omg Freya! What a beauty! I’m obsessed with her little furry face. I can imagine how having a puppy has turned your life a little upside down, but yes, totally worth it!

Ooooh you read Captivated! I need to know more! What did you think of it???
